Fight between fans in Italy leaves one dead; young man was stabbed

Knife used in the attack was found near the crime scene; 19-year-old suspect turned himself in to police and remains in custody.

A fight between fans ended in tragedy in the city of Bergamo, in northern Italy. Riccardo Claris, 26, an Atalanta fan, was stabbed to death during a confrontation with Inter Milan fans. The incident occurred near the Atalanta stadium, after Inter fans chanted in support of the Milanese club at the entrance to a bar.

A group of local fans did not welcome the demonstration, leading to a general fight. Jacopo de Simone, 19, voluntarily turned himself in to the police shortly after the incident and admitted to stabbing the victim. However, in a preliminary statement, he said that he acted to defend his twin brother, who was being attacked. Police found the knife used in the attack near the crime scene. Authorities are keeping the suspect in custody and are expected to question him in the next few hours.

During Sunday’s (4/5) Italian Championship match against Monza, away from home, Atalanta fans carried a banner in honor of Riccardo Claris, with the words “Claris with us everywhere.” Riccardo Claris was part of the Curva Nord, Atalanta’s best-known organized team. He played amateur football for Torre di Roveri and Gavarnese.
