Marcus Rashford will remain at Manchester United until at least January after failing to secure a move before the summer transfer window closed.
The England forward returned to Old Trafford following his loan spell at Barcelona, where he had hoped to continue his career. The Catalan club held an option to sign him permanently for around €30 million but decided not to activate it, forcing Rashford to return to his parent club. BBC Sport
A permanent departure still appeared likely during the summer. United were open to offers, while Rashford was reportedly interested in beginning a new chapter elsewhere. Arsenal emerged as a possible late destination, but their interest did not develop into a formal agreement.
Rashford’s salary was one of the main complications. Although United were prepared to negotiate a reasonable transfer fee, few clubs were willing to meet both the asking price and the financial demands associated with his contract.
The 28-year-old will now attempt to rebuild his Manchester United career under Michael Carrick.
That possibility appeared remote when Rashford initially left the club. He had fallen out of favour under former head coach Ruben Amorim and spent time on loan with Aston Villa before joining Barcelona for the 2025/26 campaign.
The managerial change at Old Trafford has offered him a possible route back into the team. There are encouraging signs that the relationship can be repaired, but questions about his long-term future have not disappeared. Regular football and strong performances could revive his United career—or attract new interest when the transfer market reopens in January.
For now, Rashford is staying at Old Trafford. What once looked like an unwanted return could become an unexpected second chance.
