Bukayo Saka scored the decisive goal as Arsenal secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park, extending their winning start to the new Premier League season.
The England international converted Riccardo Calafiori’s low delivery in the 59th minute, providing the breakthrough in a closely contested match that offered few clear chances.
Arsenal entered the game looking to build on their impressive opening-day win over Coventry City. Aston Villa, meanwhile, were aiming to respond after suffering a heavy defeat at Brighton.
Unai Emery’s side produced a much more disciplined performance in front of their home supporters, but their ongoing problems in attack prevented them from taking anything from the game.
Villa came closest to scoring during the first half when Emiliano Buendía sent a powerful effort against the crossbar. Nicolas Jackson also created a promising opportunity after winning possession from Gabriel Magalhães, but George Hemmings could not convert his cross inside the penalty area.
Arsenal controlled possession for long periods without seriously troubling debutant goalkeeper Zion Suzuki before the break. Calafiori directed a header over the bar, but Mikel Arteta’s team lacked their usual sharpness in the final third.
Arteta responded by introducing Eberechi Eze at half-time, and the change gave Arsenal greater creativity on the left.
The visitors thought they had been awarded a penalty early in the second half when Saka went down following a challenge from Ian Maatsen. Referee Jarred Gillett initially pointed to the spot, but a VAR review found the contact had taken place outside the penalty area. Martin Ødegaard went close from the resulting free-kick but could not find the target.
Arsenal did not have to wait much longer for the opening goal.
Eze found Calafiori’s run into the Villa box, and the Italian defender delivered a dangerous ball across the six-yard area. Saka reacted ahead of Maatsen and forced the ball beyond Suzuki to put the visitors in front.
Villa attempted to increase the pressure after falling behind, with Alejandro Garnacho and Aaron Wan-Bissaka introduced from the bench. Arsenal, however, defended their penalty area with composure and prevented David Raya from having to make a save.
Former Villa defender Ezri Konsa also made his Arsenal debut during the closing stages, receiving a mixed reception from the home crowd as Arteta added another defensive presence to protect the lead.
The Gunners managed the final minutes professionally, limiting Villa’s space and frustrating their attempts to find an equaliser. Declan Rice made one particularly important intervention to stop Maatsen after the full-back had advanced into the Arsenal penalty area.
According to Opta Analyst, Villa have now failed to record a shot on target in both of their opening league matches. They are only the second Premier League team since detailed shot records began in 2003/04 to start a season in that manner.
The result also represented Arsenal’s 14th 1-0 Premier League victory across the last three seasons—six more than any other club during the same period.
Arteta revealed that he had reminded his players of their painful defeat at Villa Park last season, when Buendía scored a stoppage-time winner. The Arsenal manager said that disappointment provided additional motivation for his side’s latest visit, according to The Guardian.
This was not Arsenal at their most fluent, but it was another display of the control and defensive resilience that helped them win the Premier League title last season. Two matches have brought two victories and two clean sheets, keeping their title defence firmly on course.
Villa can take encouragement from a more competitive performance, although their lack of cutting edge remains a concern for Emery. They have opened the campaign with two defeats, no goals and no shots on target.
