France defeated New Zealand 2-1 on August 31 in the third round of the women’s soccer group stage at the Paris Olympics. The match, held at the Lyon stadium, saw goals from Katoto (2x) for the home team and Taylor for the New Zealanders.

The French needed a victory to secure their place and guarantee the top spot in the group, and they put pressure on the New Zealand defense. The pressure paid off at the 22nd minute of the first half when Baltimore, wearing jersey number 17, made a play down the left wing and crossed the ball for Katoto to head into the goal.

Despite the goal, France continued to push for another, but it was New Zealand that would equalize: at the 43rd minute of the first half, the New Zealanders took a throw-in, and jersey number 2 Taylor controlled the ball and fired a shot beyond the reach of goalkeeper Peyraud-Magnin.

However, the tie did not last long. Early in the second half, at the 4th minute, Karchaoui received a pass on the left and delivered a precise cross into the area for Katoto to put into the back of the net, finalizing the scoreline.

France will now face Brazil in the quarterfinals of the tournament on August 3 (Saturday) at 4:00 PM.
