FIFA released the latest update to its national team rankings this Thursday (July 10). Brazil remained in fifth place with 1,777.69 points, solidifying its place in the top five. The big news at the top of the list was Portugal’s rise from seventh to sixth place with 1,770.53 points after winning the Nations League.
Argentina, the reigning world champion and Copa América champion, remains firmly in the lead with 1,885.36 points. After losing to Portugal in the UEFA competition final, Spain remains in second place (1,867.09 points). France, a Nations League semifinalist, rounds out the top three with 1,862.03 points.
One of the negative highlights was Italy, which, with a performance below expectations and elimination in the quarterfinals of the Nations League, dropped out of the top 10 of the ranking. Costa Rica, on the other hand, made the biggest climb, jumping to 40th place (1493.85 points). This significant improvement is the result of its campaign in the Concacaf Gold Cup, a competition in which the team reached the quarterfinals, being eliminated by the United States, who became runners-up.
