On Saturday, Fluminense officially announced the signing of Facundo Bernal, a talented 20-year-old Uruguayan midfielder from Defensor-URU. Bernal was presented at the Carlos Castilho training center, underwent medical exams, and signed a contract with the club extending until July 2028.

“I’m very happy. I always wanted to make this leap in my career, and Fluminense, being one of the biggest clubs in Brazil and the current South American champion, is the perfect place. As soon as I heard about the opportunity, I told my representative that I wanted to be here. I’m glad everything has come together,” Bernal said.

The deal involves Fluminense paying $3.6 million (approximately R$20 million) for 60% of the player’s economic rights. Initially, the club had offered $2.5 million (about R$13.9 million) for 80% of the rights, which was rejected by Defensor.

With Bernal’s arrival, Fluminense has now made five signings during the international transfer window. Besides the Uruguayan midfielder, the club has also brought in defenders Thiago Silva and Ignácio, defensive midfielder Nonato, and midfielder Kevin Serna.

Facundo Bernal had a promising career in Uruguay’s youth teams but was sidelined for nearly 300 days due to a cruciate ligament injury, which prevented him from participating in the last South American U-20 Championship and the U-20 World Cup. He made his professional debut for Defensor in February 2022 and now aims to make a significant impact in Brazilian football with Fluminense.
