Man United idol says Amorim’s comment on Rashford caused tension

Coach said he’d rather have a trainer on the bench than a player who doesn’t give his all.

Man United idol says Amorim's comment on Rashford caused tension

The atmosphere remains tense at Manchester United. Not even the 1-0 victory over Fulham last weekend in the Premier League eased the club’s situation. This is because, in a press conference, coach Rúben Amorim was asked about Rashford’s absence from the bench once again, and his response was blunt. “It’s the same situation for all players. If you give your best, if you do things the right way, we can use all players. And you could see that today on the bench—we lacked a bit of (certain characteristics) rhythm to go and change the game or adjust some pieces. But I prefer it this way. I will put Vital in before putting a player who doesn’t give 100% every day. So I won’t change in that regard,” said Amorim.

His sharp statement was not well received by some, including club legend Rio Ferdinand, who felt the situation could have been handled differently. On his social media, the former defender stated, “If I were the player the coach said that about, my heart, my pride, and my ego would be crushed. Someone questioning your commitment, questioning whether you will give 100% for your team, suggesting you might slack off and take shortcuts.”

Ferdinand also called the comment “damning” and said Amorim had “pulled a gun” on Rashford, using a metaphor to suggest there was no way back for the player’s reintegration into the main squad.

“Look at the situation and think: he has been there for such a short time, and unceremoniously, he pulled out a 9mm and just bang. There’s no going back from this. If he backtracks, it means other players can take their foot off the gas and later still get a chance to return to the team,” concluded the former defender. Get the edge with ToSport.
