The opening of the Paris 2024 Olympics promises to be unforgettable, marked by an innovative ceremony that departs from traditional stadiums and unfolds in the heart of the city. For the first time in the Modern Era of the Games, the parade of delegations will take place on the River Seine, traversing six kilometers through central Paris. Each nation’s boats will be equipped with cameras to broadcast the event on 80 screens spread along the route.

The idea for a Seine River ceremony emerged in 2019, initially facing resistance from French police due to logistical and security concerns. Didier Lallement, then Chief of Police, deemed the proposal “crazy,” citing the challenges of securing a city still scarred by the 2015 attacks. However, President Emmanuel Macron believed in the vision and insisted on bringing the project to fruition, asserting that the time was right to turn this bold idea into reality.

With over 7,000 athletes navigating the Seine, security will be a top priority. Paris 2024 will feature the largest security operation for the Olympics since World War II, mobilizing around 45,000 police officers, thousands of soldiers, and private security personnel to ensure the event’s safety. Although there are no direct threats to the Games, French authorities have already neutralized two potential attack attempts, bolstering vigilance during the ceremony and sporting events.

The estimated global audience for the opening ceremony is 3 billion people, who will watch athletes parade through one of the world’s most iconic settings. Organizers are keeping many details of the event a secret, but Thomas Jolly, the artistic director of the ceremony, has promised a “grand fresco” that will celebrate the connection between Paris, France, and the world.

In the meantime, competitions began on Wednesday (24), with events in sports such as women’s football, men’s football, rugby sevens, and archery. However, the opening ceremony will be the true kick-off of an Olympics that promises to be memorable for everyone.
