According to French newspaper L’Equipe, the Spanish club has decided to change the number of its star player and plans to increase shirt sales.
Following Luka Modric’s departure, Real Madrid’s number 10 jersey became vacant. But apparently, it won’t be for long. According to French newspaper L’Equipe, the number will now be worn by striker Kylian Mbappé, who will enter his second season at the Santiago Bernabeu.
In his debut season at Real Madrid, Kylian Mbappé inherited the number 9 jersey, which Karim Benzema had vacated in 2022. For the vast majority of his career at PSG, the Frenchman wore the number 7, currently occupied by Brazilian Vinícius Júnior at the Spanish club.
Club Decision
Mbappé, for his part, has always worn the number 10 jersey for the French national team, including in both World Cups he played in, winning the title in 2018 and finishing runner-up in 2022. According to the French newspaper, the decision to hand the number 10 to the striker was made by Real Madrid itself, and, happy with the number 9, the player reportedly did not request the change.
Real Madrid, on the other hand, would hope to increase sales of Mbappé’s jerseys with the number 10 on the back. Many jerseys with the striker’s number “9” were already sold at the beginning of his time, and now the club’s directors are confident that with the number 10, Mbappé’s jersey sales will increase.
