The United States defeated Australia 2-1 today (31) in the final round of Group B of the women’s soccer tournament at the Paris Olympics. The match, held at the Velodrome stadium, saw goals from Rodman and Albert for the USA, and Kennedy for Australia.

The United States pressed for a goal for much of the first half, with Australia putting in a strong defensive effort. However, the Americans managed to score in the 43rd minute, with Rodman taking advantage of a scramble in the area following a corner kick.

In the second half, as the result meant elimination for Australia, they started to push more into the attacking half in search of an equalizer. However, it was the USA that extended their lead: in the 32nd minute of the second half, a poor clearance by the Australian defense fell to Albert, who calmly adjusted and shot into the top corner of the goal, beating goalkeeper Arnold.

Australia did not give up, and in stoppage time, they pulled one back: Fowler crossed from the left, Heyman out-jumped the American defender and set up Kennedy to push the ball into the net. Despite this late goal, the match ended with the USA securing the win.

With this result, the United States advances to the knockout stage with a perfect record, having won all three matches in Group B. Australia, on the other hand, will need to wait for the outcomes of other matches to determine if they will qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.
