Understand why Chelsea 'zeroed' the football competitions with the World Cup title

Billionaire club from London, England, Chelsea won the Club World Cup by beating PSG 3-0 on Sunday (13/7)

Chelsea not only won the Club World Cup over Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday (July 13), but also swept the world of football competitions with the title held in the United States. Founded in 1905, the English team has won all 11 top-level championships it has competed in throughout its history, including two world championships, five continental championships, and four domestic titles.

Chelsea’s World Cup Titles

Chelsea’s first memory of world competition wasn’t a good one – a loss to Corinthians in the 2012 final – but the team managed to lift the trophy in 2021. Against Palmeiras, the English team won 2-1 and took the trophy for the tournament now known as the Intercontinental Cup.

The Club World Cup, in World Cup format, became part of Chelsea’s collection in its first edition. Despite a patchy start, the team qualified in second place in Group D, behind Flamengo – they lost to Flamengo (3-1) in the second round, but beat Los Angeles FC (2-0) in their debut and Espérance (3-0) to secure a spot in the knockout round. In the final stage of the World Cup, Enzo Maresca’s team stepped up a gear and crushed their opponents.

In the round of 16, Chelsea beat Benfica in extra time (4-1) and then eliminated Brazilian side Palmeiras in the quarterfinals (2-1) and Fluminense in the semifinals (2-0), before crushing PSG (3-0) in the final.

Chelsea’s Continental Titles

The Blues began their continental journey in 1971, when they won the European Cup Winners’ Cup – years later, in 1998, they repeated the feat in the same competition and also won the European Super Cup. Their peak came in 2012, with the unprecedented Champions League triumph, led by former Ivorian striker Didier Drogba.

Their second title came in 2021, along with their second Super Cup trophy. In the Europa League, they won another two titles: 2013 and 2019. The remaining title was the Conference League title, the most recent tournament created by UEFA. The final crown came in the 2024/25 season, when Chelsea defeated Real Betis-ESP and “zeroed” the continental titles.

Chelsea’s National Titles

At the national level, Chelsea began their triumphs in the 1950s, winning the 1954/55 English Championship and the 1955 Community Shield. The Premier League – as the domestic league became known from the 1990s onwards – would return to the Blues’ collection five times in the 21st century, as would the Community Shield, which they have won three times since 2000. In knockout competitions, the Blues began their success in the 1960s.

The traditional FA Cup was won for the first time in 1969/70, and the club has now won eight titles. In England, teams also compete for the League Cup, which Chelsea won for the first time in 1964/65, bringing their total to five titles.
