The Brasileirão is over: check out the qualified teams and the relegated ones

The biggest football tournament in Brazil has come to an end. On Sunday, the 8th, all 20 teams from Série A of the Brazilian Championship took to the field at the same time to definitively decide the championship. There was a title after 29 years, relegation in the centenary year, and a Libertadores spot after 35 years. Here’s everything that happened. Find top football scores at latest soccer scores.

As expected, Botafogo was crowned the great Brazilian champion of 2024 by defeating São Paulo 2-1 at Nilton Santos. Botafogo could have even lost, as second-placed Palmeiras was defeated by Fluminense at Allianz Parque. This is Botafogo’s third title in the competition and their first in 29 years.

Out of the eight spots for the Libertadores, seven had already been secured, and the last spot was between Bahia and Cruzeiro. Vasco still had a mathematical chance, but it depended on both teams losing and having to make up a goal difference of 12 goals. Bahia only depended on itself and needed a victory over already-relegated Atlético-GO to secure qualification.

And that’s exactly what happened: Thaciano and Luciano Rodriguez scored the goals that sent Tricolor de Aço to South America’s biggest club competition after 35 years. Cruzeiro did its part and won 1-0 away to Juventude, but it wasn’t enough.

The battle to avoid relegation was the highlight of the final round. Atlético-MG, Athletico-PR, Bragantino, and Fluminense fought to escape the drop zone, with Athletico-PR failing to survive and being relegated in their centenary year.

Fluminense did its part, winning 1-0 against Palmeiras at Allianz Parque. Bragantino did the same, thrashing already-relegated Criciúma 5-1. In the desperate match, Atlético-MG won 1-0 with a goal from Rubens, following a rebound from a missed penalty by Hulk, securing the fall of Furacão.

The relegation battle also impacted the spots for the 2025 Copa Sudamericana. With their respective victories, Fluminense and Atlético-MG joined Grêmio, Cruzeiro, Vasco, and Vitória as the teams qualified for next year’s international tournament.
