Spain defeated France 5-3 today (September 9) in the gold medal match of the men’s football tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The game, which took place at the Parc des Princes stadium, saw goals from Fermin López (2), Baena, and Camello (2) for Spain, and Millot, Akliouche, and Mateta for France.

France took the lead in the match: in the 11th minute of the first half, Spain’s defense cleared poorly, and Millot pounced on the ball, scoring for France. However, the equalizer came quickly: Baena found Fermin López alone in the area, and the number 11 put the ball into the net in the 18th minute.

Following that, Spain completely dominated: in the 25th minute, Miranda crossed into the area, Ruiz’s header was saved by the goalkeeper but fell to Fermin, who scored his second goal. Three minutes later, Baena scored from a free kick, leaving French goalkeeper Restes motionless to make it 3-1.

In the second half, France fought back and managed to reduce the deficit in the 34th minute: Olise took a free kick from the right, and Akliouche flicked it at the near post to deceive the defense and score France’s second goal.

France continued to push for an equalizer and found it in the dying minutes: Akliouche was fouled in the area, and after the Brazilian referee Ramon Abatti Abel reviewed the play with the VAR, a penalty was awarded. In stoppage time, Mateta converted the penalty, leveling the match.

In extra time, Spain took the lead again in the 10th minute of the first half of extra time: after a precise series of passes, Bernabé set up Camello who finished with a lob over the goalkeeper to regain the lead.

Camello would be the one to finally crush French hopes: with France pressing for an equalizer in stoppage time of extra time, the number 21 was released and went one-on-one with the goalkeeper, scoring despite pressure from the French defender.

Spain, having lost to Brazil in the Tokyo 2020 final, won the gold medal in this event for the second time in its history. The first was on home soil at the Barcelona 1992 Olympics. Never miss a game again with BB score.
