This Sunday, in the second round of the Brazilian Championship, Palmeiras visited Sport at Ilha do Retiro, won 2-1 with a controversial goal scored in injury time and achieved its first triumph. Flaco López and Piquerez scored for Verdão, while Chrystian Barletta scored for the home team, who showed great dissatisfaction with the result.
With the victory, the first after a goalless draw with Botafogo in the opening match of the competition, Palmeiras reached four points, in seventh place. On the other side, Sport remained with one point, in 17th. Palmeiras returns to the field next Wednesday, when it hosts Cerro Porteño, at Allianz Parque, in the second round of the group stage of the Libertadores. Next Saturday, Sport will visit Vasco, in São Januário, for the third round of the Brasileirão.
Palmeiras opened the scoring in the 31st minute of the first half. After a cross from Vanderlan on the left, Flaco López was pulled down by Chico in the area and the referee signaled a penalty. The Argentine striker then took responsibility, shot high and converted.
In the 38th minute of the first half, Sport tied the game. After a corner kick from Lucas Lima on the right, Chrystian Barletta got ahead of his marker in the area and, with his first touch, shot past Weverton to make it all even. Sport almost turned the score around in the 45th minute of the first half. When taking a free kick from the midfield, Sérgio Oliveira went for the left corner, but hit the crossbar.
In the 15th minute of the second half, Palmeiras almost took the lead again. Facundo Torres headed the ball to Aníbal Moreno’s cross from the right, but Caíque França saved it and saved Sport. Sport came close to scoring in the 20th minute of the second half, when Sérgio Oliveira took advantage of a loose ball in the area and shot straight at the goal, but the ball hit Flaco López’s chest.
In the 46th minute of the second half, Palmeiras scored the goal that sealed their first victory in the tournament. After Raphael Veiga was brought down in the area, the referee awarded a penalty. Piquerez took the penalty and scored.
