Unbeaten at home in the Brazilian Championship, Mirassol beat Corinthians in a comeback with the brilliance of the former Timão goalkeeper and returned to the top half of the Brazilian Championship table.
Corinthians suffered its first defeat in the Dorival Júnior Era. This Saturday (10/5), with a penalty missed by Memphis Depay – the Dutchman tried to chip it, but goalkeeper Walter, former Timão, saved it -, the black and white team from São Paulo was turned around by Mirassol and lost 2-1, at the Campos Maia Stadium, in the eighth round of the Brazilian Championship. Cacá opened the scoring for the Alvinegro, while Edson Carioca and Gabriel turned the game around for the home team. With the result, Corinthians remains without a win away from home in the national tournament. The black and white team remains in eighth place, with the same 10 points, but could still lose positions as the round progresses.
Mirassol beats its rival for the first time in its history, jumped positions in the table and is in 10th place, also reaching 10 points. The two teams now return to the field for different competitions. Corinthians changes its focus and visits Racing, from Uruguay, next Thursday, at 7 pm (Brasília time), at the Centenário Stadium, for the fifth round of Group C of the Copa Sul-Americana. Mirassol faces Internacional next Sunday (18), starting at 8:30 pm, at the Beira-Rio Stadium, for the ninth round of the Brazilian Championship.
The first dangerous chance came from Mirassol. In a rehearsed free kick, Reinaldo passed the ball to the edge of the area and Danielzinho made the cutback. Fabrício Daniel arrived to shoot at goal, but did not get a good grip on the ball and sent it over the crossbar. In the 14th minute, Mirassol had a great opportunity to open the scoring. Fabrício Daniel took advantage of the space in Corinthians’ defense in a counterattack and launched Iury Castilho. The forward was face to face with Hugo Souza, but Matheuzinho put pressure on the marking, and the player shot wide. In the 25th minute, Mirassol almost opened the scoring. Reinaldo took a corner kick at half height at the near post. After a deflection, the ball hit Iury Castilho, who finished with a ‘thrill’ and ended up sending it over the goal line. A minute later, it was Corinthians’ turn to almost open the scoring at Campos Maia. Igor Coronado made a great play, dribbled past the marking and shot towards goal, which Walter saved. After a VAR review, it was identified that Neto Moura had touched Coronado’s shot on the arm, and the referee signaled a penalty. Memphis went to take the kick and tried a lob, but Walter saved it.
On the rebound, the Dutchman sent it wide. It was at the end of the first half that Corinthians managed to open the scoring. Memphis took a corner kick to the far post and Cacá rose alone to head the ball into Mirassol’s net. In the second half, Mirassol came back with everything and made it all equal again. Cristian passed the ball to Reinaldo in depth. The full-back crossed low into the middle of the area, no one from Corinthians’ defense was there to clear it, and Edson Carioca pushed it into the back of the net: 1-1. And in the 19th minute, Mirassol turned the game around and saw their fans celebrate. Iury Castilho was released at speed, beat Matheuzinho, invaded the penalty area and shot. The ball deflected off Matheuzinho and went over Hugo Souza, until Gabriel arrived to finish and hit the back of the net at the far post: 2-1. With 30 minutes gone, the home team came close to scoring a third goal. In a throw-in into the box, Negueba was released at speed and kicked hard, but sent the ball over the goal line. Corinthians, in turn, were left on the field after being turned around. Dorival even tried to make changes to the team, but the solutions did not work. In injury time, Mirassol extended the lead with Matheus Bianqui, who beat Cacá and finished past Hugo Souza, but the goal was disallowed due to a touch on the player’s arm at the start of the play.
