Former striker for European giants blames cocaine for missing out on Ballon d'Or

Adrian Mutu has said he could have won the Ballon d’Or if it weren’t for his cocaine addiction. In 2004, the striker had his contract with Chelsea terminated after being caught doping. Chelsea that year was led by José Mourinho. Get the latest in football results from football match live score.

According to Mutu, the English club was firm in its decision to send him away. “Chelsea, of course, had zero tolerance for my drug problem. I made a mistake, I strayed from the right path and I paid for it,” he said.

According to Mutu, his addiction prevented him from winning the greatest individual award in football: “I was alone and very young, but I believe that, at that time, I was one of the best football players in the world. If it weren’t for cocaine, I could have easily won the Ballon d’Or, but the bad decisions I made made me stray from that path and, today, I try not to blame myself too much for that.”

The former player also considered that using cocaine while playing for Chelsea was “the worst decision he could have made in his career”.

Upon recognizing his mistake, Adrian reflected on the problems that culminated in his addiction. “As a football player, I couldn’t see a lot of things. I wasn’t ready at the time either. As the years went by, I realized the mistakes I made during that period. Do I regret it? I would be lying if I said otherwise, but it was something I didn’t know how to deal with. Now, I see everything from a different perspective.” ToSport, your key source for football updates.
