Auxerre, a successful club in France in the late 1990s and early 2000s, has defender Jubal Júnior, who was trained at Santos, as one of its standouts. In the team’s first season after returning to the top flight of the French Championship, the Brazilian contributed not only defensively, but also in attack.

Jubal finished Ligue 1, in which Auxerre was in 11th place, with six goals. He was the defender who scored the most goals in the tournament. Timo Kehrer, from Monaco, and Bafodé Diakité, from Lille, come next, both with four. In relation to his own team, he only scored fewer goals this season than midfielder Hamed Traoré and striker Gaetan Perrin – they each scored 10 times.

Of Jubal’s six goals, three were scored from the penalty spot and three from open play. The highlight was the 3-0 victory over Olympique de Marseille on February 22, in the 23rd round of the French Championship.

On that occasion, he scored twice. When the team was already winning 1-0, he converted a penalty kick and extended the lead. He then closed the score with a header.

The 31-year-old Brazilian was the defender in the French Championship with the highest average score on the Sofascore statistics platform. With 7.25, he was above names such as Beraldo and Pacho, from PSG, and Alexsandro, who plays for Lille and is being targeted by Carlo Ancelotti for the Brazilian National Team.

Jubal arrived at Santos in the early 2010s, after a period in the Vila Nova youth system. In 2013, he was a starter for Peixe as they won the São Paulo Junior Football Cup. In the same season, he was promoted to the professional team. He remained with Peixe until 2015, when he was loaned to Avaí. In total, he played 22 games and scored one goal for Peixe. Jubal also played for Portuguese teams Arouca, Vitória SC, Portimonense, Boavista and Vitória FC before arriving at Auxerre in 2020.
