Could Cristiano Ronaldo play for Flamengo in the World Cup? Boto answers

‘We will try to reinforce in this window for the World Cup, but the main objective is to have reinforcements for the rest of the season, not just for the Club World Cup’, said the director

According to the newspaper Marca, star Cristiano Ronaldo has received an offer from a Brazilian club to play in the Club World Cup, between June 14 and July 13. Flamengo’s executive director of football, José Boto, spoke about his thoughts on the possibility of counting on the Portuguese star during the FIFA competition.

“My idea and that of the coach (Filipe Luís), obviously, for the club’s marketing, to expand its name, there is another idea. As we have very clear objectives, which include winning the league, trying to win the Libertadores, the Copa do Brasil, trying to win everything if possible. If not, trying to win two of the three major competitions here. We don’t look favorably on the arrival of a player, be it Cristiano (Ronaldo) or anyone else, just to play in the World Cup”, said the director at the “3rd Bola Branca Conference” seminar, organized by Rádio Renascença in Lisbon. “We don’t think that, in terms of the group, this will have a positive impact. We will try to reinforce in this window for the World Cup, but the main objective is to have reinforcements for the rest of the season, not just for the Club World Cup. Especially because it is a new competition, no one knows how the teams will react to this, and making an investment that could jeopardize the rest of the season, from our sporting side we don’t look favorably on that”, he added.

Last Monday (26/5), Cristiano Ronaldo hinted at the possibility of leaving Al Nassr. The Portuguese player’s contract with the Saudi Arabian club, for which he scored 99 goals in 111 games over three seasons, is coming to an end. “This chapter is over. The story? It’s still being written. Thank you all,” the striker posted on social media. Last week, Marca reported that Al Nassr was preparing a huge renewal proposal for CR7. The salary would be around 15.2 million euros (around R$97.8 million) per month.

After indicating his departure from Al Nassr, Cristiano Ronaldo could play in the first edition of the FIFA Club World Cup. The Portuguese star is interested in moving to Monterrey, Mexico. If he moves to Monterrey, Cristiano Ronaldo will reunite with defender Sergio Ramos and midfielder Sergio Canales, former Real Madrid teammates. According to Marca, CR7’s contract with Monterrey would only be for the World Cup. The FIFA Club World Cup will be played from June 15 to July 13 in the United States. Monterrey is in Group E, alongside Internazionale, River Plate and Urawa Reds from Japan.
