After two consecutive defeats, Corinthians won again in the Brazilian Championship. This Saturday (4/19), under the command of interim coach Orlando Ribeiro, Timão beat Sport 2-1, in a comeback, at the Neo Química Arena, in the fifth round. The name of the match was Memphis Depay, who scored both goals for the São Paulo team after Sérgio Oliveira opened the scoring for the visitors. This was the first match without Ramón Díaz.
The Argentine coach was fired last Thursday. The board is still looking for a replacement. With the result, the black-and-white team temporarily jumps to seventh place in the competition, with seven points. However, the team could still lose positions depending on the other results of the round. Leão remains in last place, with one. Corinthians now turns its attention to the South American. The club will host Racing-URU on Thursday, in the third round of the group stage. The next challenge in the Série A will be on Sunday, against Flamengo, at Maracanã.
The home team tried to press early on and almost opened the scoring after five minutes. Romero shot from the right and crossed low to Memphis. The Dutchman controlled the ball inside the area, turned on his marker and finished with great danger. Then it was the number 10’s turn to make the play and find Yuri Alberto in the area. The forward threw himself at the ball and hit the post. In the 11th minute, Carillo received a beautiful three-finger pass from Memphis on the right and passed it perfectly to Romero. The Dutchman exchanged passes with Leo Maná and, at the edge of the area, hit it hard. The ball deflected off João Silva and ended up in the back of the net. Corinthians had a chance to extend their lead moments later. Yuri Alberto was passed by Carillo, cut inside and shot inches wide of the post. In the end, Sport even tried to equalize, but could not break through the Timão defense, which held on until the final whistle.
