Brazil struggles but defeats Chile and breathes easier in the World Cup qualifiers.

Brazil defeated Chile 2-1 last Thursday at the National Stadium in Santiago during the ninth round of the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. The goals were scored by Vargas for the hosts, and by Igor Jesus and Luiz Henrique for the Brazilian national team. Check out the best football results at live sport scores.

The strategy proposed by coach Dorival Júnior to start the match by pressing the opponent fell apart just two minutes in. Loyola, completely unmarked, delivered a perfect cross to Vargas, who was also alone in the area, heading it over goalkeeper Éderson. With the lead, Chile grew into the game and began to control the action, posing more of a threat to the goal than the visitors.

Even though they were better in the match, Ricardo Gareca’s team couldn’t extend their lead and saw Igor Jesus equalize in stoppage time of the first half after a cross from Savinho on the right. For the second half, Dorival Júnior substituted André and Paquetá for Gérson and Bruno Guimarães, changes that improved Brazil’s performance. However, like their opponents, they struggled to be decisive in front of goal.

That was until the 43rd minute of the second half. Luiz Henrique, who had come on for Savinho, received a pass from Bruno Guimarães, feinted past his marker, and shot across the goal to secure Brazil’s victory. With this result, the five-time champions jumped to fourth place and pushed Chile deeper into trouble, making it unlikely for them to qualify for the next World Cup. Get a step ahead with BB Score.
