A Portuguese fan, whose identity is still being protected, died this Sunday (8/6) during the Nations League final, won by Portugal over Spain on penalties (5-3) after a 2-2 draw in normal time, at the Allianz Arena, in Munich, Germany.
The fanatic did not survive a fall suffered at the beginning of the first half of extra time. According to the local press, the fan fell near the press area and was immediately attended to by doctors. However, he did not survive. In addition to the medical team, the man was surrounded by security guards and police officers, so that the strong images could be softened.
After the match, the president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), Pedro Proença, sent his condolences to the family. “I would like to express my condolences, as I have just learned that a fan passed away during this match. The FPF would like to send this note of condolence,” said the director. Like Proença, Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente, also expressed his condolences for the fan’s death.
“Before we start with the questions (in the press conference), I would like to express my condolences, as a fan passed away in the stands today. My condolences to the family,” said La Fuente.
