Daniel Alves' wife announces pregnancy: 'A rainbow full of love after the storm'

Daniel Alves’ wife, Joana Sanz, confirmed her pregnancy three days after a Spanish court reviewed the former player’s rape conviction.

Three days after the Spanish court reviewed the conviction of former Brazilian player Daniel Alves for rape and acquitted him, Joana Sanz, the player’s wife, announced her pregnancy. The 32-year-old model has been married to Daniel Alves since 2017 – the two met in 2015.

On the social network Instagram, she posted a long statement, telling about the process of getting pregnant. She said she went through in vitro fertilization procedures, suffered miscarriages and other difficulties until the pregnancy was confirmed. “I didn’t want to share anything until it was more than obvious, but I wanted to share for those who are fighting,” wrote Joana Sanz, along with a video.

She began her story by saying that when she was younger, she didn’t have a “maternal instinct,” which changed over time: “Since I was 22, I’ve had to deal with questions like ‘when will the baby be born?’… Scary social pressure. I never had a maternal instinct, that desire to have children or to enjoy carrying someone’s baby. Over the years, my group of friends had babies, and social media was full of births (I think that’s a part of age).”

According to Joana, the idea of having a child gained momentum five years ago, although she was afraid: “Five years ago, I approached the idea of being a mother with a lot of fear. Fear because a human being would depend on me to survive, fear of not being able to work, fear of losing myself as a woman… But that’s another story.” The model then spoke about the pain and frustrations along the way until her pregnancy was confirmed:

“What I was trying to say is that a healthy 27-year-old woman had two IVFs, three miscarriages and, finally, a fallopian tube operation, in addition to the appearance of endometriosis. I went through all kinds of tests over the years, with embryos that were divine, and I couldn’t find a reason for anything. The frustration and the reason why ‘everyone’ gets pregnant as if by magic tormented me.”

The loss of her mother, three days before Daniel Alves was arrested on rape charges, was one of the factors that made her reflect on having children: “The moment I lost my mother two years ago, I had no parents or siblings, the feeling of orphanhood and emptiness stayed with me until the day I heard my baby’s heartbeat for the first time. My last frozen embryo, my last hope of having a reason to be strong in life.

Here she is, healthy and growing. And I know it was my mother who sent her to me, so that I would never feel alone again, so that I could look forward to life and have this rainbow full of love after a storm like this.”
