Bayern Munich has threatened to take legal action against the Canadian Football Association after the serious injury to its left-back Alphonso Davies in a match for the national team, the club’s chairman of the board, Jan-Christian Dreesen, said on Friday (28/3). The German club is demanding from Canada Soccer “a full clarification of the events” and “reserves the right to take legal action” after the player ruptured the cruciate ligaments in his right knee, the chief told the Bild newspaper website.

“Sending a clearly injured player with an injured knee on a 12-hour intercontinental flight without a full medical examination is, in our opinion, gross negligence and a clear breach of duty to provide medical care,” Dreesen added. The 24-year-old captain of the Canadian national team, Alphonso Davies, was injured on Sunday against the United States (2-1 victory) during the match for third place in the CONCACAF Nations League.

Canada Soccer gave its approval and Davies flew to Munich, where medical tests diagnosed a ruptured cruciate ligament in his right knee.

“We want to clarify how it happened. Getting on the plane, 12 hours of flying, we assumed it was no big deal, that it was a blow. And then this (diagnosis) comes out. It’s unprofessional, it’s not right, we have to talk about it and we have to clarify the situation,” added sporting director Christoph Freund during a press conference on Friday.

“In general, the entry of Davies, who already had muscle problems before the game, in a game of no sporting importance, is not at all understandable from our point of view,” Dreesen assessed, stating that the full-back was not to blame.

“He is the captain, he wants to take responsibility. The way this was handled is not right. It was borderline and negligent. We are the employers and we also pay the players. That is why we will investigate,” Freund said.

Davies will be out of action for at least six months and will miss the end of this season, in which his team is top of the Bundesliga and plays in the quarter-finals of the Champions League against Inter. The player renewed his contract with the club in early February until 2030, ruling out the possibility of signing for Real Madrid. BBscore football, your premier destination for football results.
