Atlético-MG meets with Luís Castro and has the Portuguese coach as a priority

Atlético-MG held a meeting with coach Luís Castro and presented the project to bring him on board for the 2025 season. Without a club since being dismissed by Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, the Portuguese coach has become a target for Brazilian clubs for the upcoming season. The club’s board is awaiting a response from Castro to move forward with the planning and has other names on the radar in case the negotiations do not progress. The meeting followed the same format as the one with Gabriel Milito, who was dismissed near the end of the season after losing the Copa do Brasil and Libertadores finals and entering the final round of the Brasileirão with relegation risks. It was attended by Atlético’s football director, Victor Bagy, and CIGA manager, Rodrigo Weber.

In addition to Luís Castro, the club’s leadership has two other undisclosed names in mind for potential hiring should the Portuguese coach decline the offer. Recently, his name was linked with Santos, and his agent even visited the Vila Belmiro facilities, but the negotiations did not move forward.

Luís Castro became well-known in Brazil after his excellent campaign with Botafogo in the first half of the 2023 Brasileirão, before the team’s eventual collapse, which ended with Palmeiras winning the title. In July, he received a call from Cristiano Ronaldo and moved to Al-Nassr, where he stayed until September. He did not survive a poor start to the season and was dismissed.
