Taremi traveled to Iran for the match against North Korea, in which he scored a goal in a 3-0 World Cup qualifying victory.

Inter Milan’s Iranian striker Mehdi Taremi is stranded in Tehran due to the Iran-Israel conflict and will miss the start of the FIFA Club World Cup, the Italian club confirmed on Saturday. Taremi, 32, travelled to his home country for the June 10 match against North Korea, in which he scored a goal in the 3-0 2026 World Cup qualifying win.

The striker was subsequently unable to board a flight to join Inter’s training camp in Los Angeles, United States, due to the bombings between Israel and Iran. An Inter source confirmed to AFP that Taremi is stranded in his home country.
Inter kick off their Club World Cup campaign with a match against Mexico’s Monterrey on Tuesday at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, east of Los Angeles. The match will also mark the debut of new coach Cristian Chivu, who was named on Monday as the successor to Simone Inzaghi, who stepped down following the 5-0 thrashing by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final.

At the team’s press conference at the Beverly Hills training camp on Saturday, Chivu said Inter were ready to bounce back from the double disappointment of losing the Serie A title and the Champions League final. The 44-year-old former Romanian international stressed that his players could be proud of this season.

“We can’t forget the trajectory of this team; it was a great season,” said the former Nerazzurri star. “This team has a lot of quality. They went all the way but didn’t win any trophies. It wasn’t a failed season.” “We knocked out Bayern Munich and Barcelona in the Champions League. We were at the top of the league, among the best in Europe, for a long time. That’s why we can’t forget. Failure doesn’t exist in football. Failure is making excuses,” he stressed.
