In the Sul-Americana final, Diniz aims for an achievement like Tite and Gallardo.

After matching the worst start of his coaching career, Fernando Diniz finally smiled at Cruzeiro. After four draws and two losses in six games, the coach secured a 1-0 victory against Lanús in Argentina, qualifying Cabuloso for the Sul-Americana final. In 2015, while managing Audax (now Grêmio Osasco), Diniz had the same record in his first six games: four draws and two losses in the Paulista Championship. He only won his seventh game, defeating São Bernardo 3-0.

With this qualification, Diniz has the chance to join multi-champions Tite and Marcelo Gallardo as the only coaches in history to achieve both major club titles in South America: the Libertadores and the Sul-Americana. In 2023, he won the continent’s premier tournament with Fluminense, defeating Boca Juniors 2-1 at Maracanã.

Former Flamengo coach Tite was the first to achieve this feat. With Internacional in 2008, he won the Sul-Americana undefeated, beating Estudiantes in the final—at that time, the competition had two legs. Four years later, in 2012, he lifted the Libertadores trophy with Corinthians, also undefeated.

Marcelo Gallardo, on the other hand, won all his titles with River Plate. He first took the Sul-Americana in 2014 against Atlético Nacional and followed it up with the Libertadores the following year, repeating the triumph in 2018. Be ahead of the game with BB Score.
