With victory over PSG, Botafogo breaks Corinthians' record

In the historic match, Botafogo defeated the favorite PSG and broke Corinthians’ record that had stood for 13 years

On Thursday (19/6), Botafogo beat Paris Saint-Germain 1-0, in the second round of the Club World Cup group stage. The result marks the first victory of a South American club over a European club in an official match of the tournament since Corinthians, in 2012.

The 2012 Club World Cup final, won by Corinthians with a 1-0 victory over Chelsea, with a goal by Paolo Guerrero and a historic performance by goalkeeper Cássio, was the last time that a non-European club beat a team from the Old Continent in the World Cup.

Since then, six other clashes have taken place between Brazilian and European clubs, with four victories for the Europeans and two draws. Grêmio, Flamengo, Palmeiras and Fluminense were the times that had the chance to end the drought.

After Corinthians’ title, the clubs from the Old Continent faced non-Europeans in 35 matches, with 28 wins, five draws and two losses. Both happened this Thursday: Inter Miami’s 2-1 victory over Porto and Botafogo’s triumph over PSG.

The Glorioso’s last match in the group stage will be next Monday, against Atlético de Madrid, at 4 pm (Brasília time), again at the Rose Bowl.
