After falling behind, Chelsea dominated, led the comeback and beat Real Betis 4-1 in the Conference League final
A performance worthy of a champion. After falling behind in the first half, Chelsea prevailed in the final stage, crushed Real Betis and won 4-1 this Wednesday (28/5), at the Municipal Stadium in Wrocław, Poland. With this victory over the Spanish team in the final, the English team was crowned Conference League champion for the 2024/25 season.
With yet another European title, Chelsea became the first club to win all the competitions on the continent. As the Conference winner for the first time, the London club is a two-time champion of the Champions League (2012 and 2021), the Europa League (2013 and 2019) and the European Cup Winners’ Cup (1971 and 1998). After this match, Real Betis’ season came to an end. Chelsea, on the other hand, will have one more competition. The English team is in Group D of the Club World Cup and will face Flamengo, Esperánce-TUN and the winner of Los Angeles FC-USA vs. América-MEX in the competition that will be played in the United States starting in June.
Encouraged by the fans, Real Betis quickly showed its “calling card” in the final. In the 8th minute of the first half, Malo Gusto misplaced a pass in defense, and Isco showed his quality to provide an assist. On the left, Abde Ezzalzouli received the ball, crossed it and opened the scoring for the Spanish team: 1-0.
The rest of the first half saw few chances for either team. Chelsea had more possession of the ball – 68% to 32% – but Betis had more shots on target – seven to four. However, each team only had one shot on target in the first 45 minutes. The second half had a completely different storyline, with a complete comeback. In the 19th minute, Cole Palmer took the ball to his left foot, on the right wing, and crossed perfectly to Enzo Fernández. The Argentine midfielder entered the area like a striker, headed the ball powerfully and tied the game: 1-1. The London imposition turned into a comeback five minutes later, with another assist from the Chelsea star. In the 24th minute, Cole Palmer received the ball, turned, took it to his right foot and crossed. Inside the area, Nicolas Jackson came in free, tried to head the ball and missed, but hit the ball with his chest and shook the net: 2-1.
The trophy was secured in the 38th minute, at a time when Chelsea’s reserves began to show their protagonism. Dewsbury-Hall, who had come on three minutes earlier, accelerated through the middle and made a good individual play before passing it to Jadon Sancho. The Englishman, who also came on in the second half, dribbled and struck a well-placed shot to secure the title for the Londoners: 3-1. Finally, Chelsea crowned the title with a rout. And it was in an individual play by the club’s star player in the 2024/25 season in the 46th minute. Ecuadorian midfielder Moisés Caicedo broke away from the defense, exchanged passes with Enzo Fernández and extended the lead with a shot from outside the area, which also had a deflection: 4-1.
