São Paulo beats Libertad and takes the lead in the Libertadores group

Lucas Ferreira and André Silva secured São Paulo’s victory over Libertad, who also missed a penalty.

São Paulo beat Libertad 2-0 this Wednesday (4/24) at the La Huerta stadium in Asunción, Paraguay, in the third round of the group stage of the Copa Libertadores. Lucas Ferreira and André Silva scored for Tricolor Paulista. The Paraguayans also had a penalty kick in their favor, but Melgarejo wasted it, hitting the crossbar.

With the result, São Paulo took the lead in Group D of the Libertadores, reaching seven points. Wednesday’s match was a direct confrontation for first place in the group, which until then belonged to Libertad, now in second place, with six goals.

São Paulo returns to the field this Saturday (26), when it visits Ceará, at Arena Castelão, in Fortaleza, for the Brazilian Championship. Libertad will face Sportivo Ameliano, away from home, on Sunday (27), for the Paraguayan Championship.
