The biggest change for the American team, however, comes off the field. Javier Mascherano, 40, has taken over as head coach, replacing Tata Martino. A former defensive midfielder, Mascherano played alongside Messi and Suárez during their time at Barcelona and has also featured for clubs such as Corinthians, River Plate, and Liverpool. As a coach, his experience is more limited, having previously led Argentina’s U-20 and Olympic teams.
With just one week of training before preseason friendlies begin, Mascherano has limited time to instill his tactical philosophy. From day one, the players were on the pitch receiving guidance from their new manager.
“We are happy, especially with the way the players returned from their break. We know it’s not always easy to come back after a long period of inactivity, but they all returned in great shape, which allowed us to push a little harder on the first day,” Mascherano said on the club’s website.
Inter Miami is set to play five preparatory matches during a tour across the United States, South America, and Central America before making their MLS debut on February 22 against New York City FC. The team will aim for their first-ever league title after last year’s campaign, where they entered the playoffs as favorites but were eliminated in the quarterfinals.
