The Champions League G8 takes shape with three rounds remaining in the group stage.

Making its debut this season, the Champions League league phase has generated a lot of buzz even before the games began. Replacing the traditional group stage, the new format has placed all 36 teams into a single points table, where the top eight automatically qualify for the knockout rounds, and the teams ranked 9th to 24th will participate in a playoff to determine the remaining spots. The rationale for the change is to have more high-profile matches. This season, for instance, games such as Liverpool vs. Real Madrid, Bayern Munich vs. Barcelona, and Arsenal vs. PSG have already taken place in this phase. In total, there are eight matchups decided by a draw to define the knockout rounds, and with five rounds completed so far, the standings are starting to take shape.

With three rounds to go, the top 8 teams (G8) are: Liverpool, Inter Milan, Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, Atalanta, Bayer Leverkusen, Arsenal, and Monaco. Traditional and strong teams in the competition, such as Bayern Munich, Manchester City, and Real Madrid, currently occupy the playoff spots but are fighting for direct qualification. The German team, for example, is just one point behind the top eight.

The biggest disappointment this season has been PSG, who are currently outside the qualification zone for even the playoffs, with only four points—two fewer than Real Madrid, the first team in the qualifying zone. With just one win in five games, an early elimination would be disastrous for the French side. Stay ahead of the curve with ToSport.
