Multi-champion for Liverpool, Dutch defender Virgil Van Dijk has established an identity with the fans and has become a club idol.
Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk has given the Reds fans reasons to be more relaxed about the negotiations involving his future at the club. With a contract until June 30 of this year, the 33-year-old player said that negotiations for his stay at Liverpool have made progress.
After the 3-2 defeat to Fulham in the English Championship, Van Dijk spoke about the situation and reinforced the affection he feels for the city and the Liverpool fans.
“We have made progress, yes (in the negotiations). I don’t know if I’ll stay, we’ll see. These are internal discussions. I love the club, I love the fans, who are always there for us and we always want to reward them,” said the Dutchman.
In March, the defender had shown no signs that he would stay at the club. He even said that he had “no idea” what his future in football would be after his contract ended.
Liverpool are the leaders of the Premier League, 11 points ahead of second-placed Arsenal, who have 62 points.
Van Dijk arrived at Liverpool in 2018. At the time, the English club paid 75 million euros (R$484 million at the current exchange rate) to buy the defender from Southampton. The defender scored 26 goals in 323 games played for Liverpool. He became a trusted player for Jurgen Klopp in the Premier League (19/20) and Champions League (2019) victories. With the trophies, he established an identity with the fans and became an idol of the club.
