
At a frenetic pace, Paris Saint-Germain reached the Club World Cup final after three defeats, two of which were in the knockout stage.
Paris Saint-Germain wowed the football world by crushing Inter Milan in the Champions League final on May 31st with a historic 5-0 victory – an unprecedented score in a European final. In the following weeks, the French team headed to the United States for the Club World Cup and maintained their winning streak, establishing a “standard.”
PSG’s campaign in the tournament between clubs from different continents began with a “home” clash. However, despite the pressure of their debut, the team crushed fellow European side Atlético de Madrid 4-0. Interestingly, the club repeated this scoreline on two other occasions in the World Cup. In the round of 16, against Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami, and in the semifinal on Wednesday (July 9th), against Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain again crushed their rivals 4-0.
This latest rout took PSG to the Club World Cup final. Luis Enrique’s team reached the final with five wins in six matches, meaning they beat their opponents 4-0 in half of their matches. Paris Saint-Germain’s final match in this edition of the World Cup will be on Sunday (July 13th) at 4 pm at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. This time, the opponent will be Chelsea, the English team that defeated Fluminense in the semifinal.
PSG’s other results in the Club World Cup
In addition to the three 4-0 routs, Paris Saint-Germain won two other matches, but suffered a setback on their way to the World Cup final. Still in the group stage, PSG faced Botafogo and was surprised by the Brazilian team. Igor Jesus scored the only goal conceded by the French team in the entire competition and secured Glorioso’s 1-0 victory. To reach the knockout stage, Paris Saint-Germain beat Seattle Sounders 2-0 and advanced to the next stage as leader of Group B. In the quarterfinals, the 2-0 victory over Bayern Munich placed the current Champions League champions among the top four.
