Porto draw with Al Ahly in an eight-goal game and fall in the first phase of the World Cup

Porto finished third in Group A with two points, while Al Ahly finished bottom with the same number of points.

Porto drew 4-4 with Al Ahly on Monday in the third and final round of Group A of the Club World Cup at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Abou Ali (three times) and Ben Romdhane scored for the Egyptian team, while Rodrigo Mora, William Gomes, Samu and Pepê scored for the Portuguese team. 

With the result, both teams failed to qualify for the round of 16 of the tournament. Porto finished third with two points. Al Ahly finished last with the same number of points. The group’s qualifiers were Palmeiras, in first place, followed by Inter Miami.

First half

The Egyptian team opened the scoring in the 14th minute of the first half. Fathy stole the ball in midfield, advanced through the middle and passed to Abou Ali, who crossed the ball into the back of the net.

Porto scored the equalizer in the 22nd minute. Rodrigo Mora received the ball at the edge of the box, got past two defenders, dribbled past the goalkeeper and scored a great goal. In the 45th minute, Abou Ali was brought down in the box by Fábio Vieira and the referee awarded a penalty. The number 9 kicked the ball into the left corner and put Al Ahly back in front.

Second half

Just four minutes into the second half, the Portuguese team scored the second goal. William Gomes, who came through the youth ranks of São Paulo, controlled the ball freely and shot with great skill to bulge the opposing net. 

However, two minutes later, Abou Ali rose alone and headed the ball into the corner of goalkeeper Cláudio Ramos’ goal. In the next play, Fábio Vieira took a corner and Samu Aghehowa headed it into the left corner of goalkeeper El Shenawy’s goal. All was equal in New Jersey.

In the 18th minute, Ben Romdhane received the ball at the edge of the box and fired a right-footed shot into the top corner, leaving Claudio Ramos with no chance. It was Al Ahly’s fourth goal of the match. In the 43rd minute, Brazilian Pepê received the ball in midfield and shot into the corner to level the score at 4-4.
