The Sporting forward is the top scorer of the European season so far.
Viktor Gyökeres is continuing his remarkable run in Europe. The striker has already scored 33 goals in just 25 games for Sporting and Sweden this season and is starting to target some major records. As the top scorer in European football, the Swedish forward’s goal-scoring average is higher than Messi’s historic 2011/12 season, when he scored 82 goals in 69 games. And it’s not just the average: Gyökeres has also scored more goals than the Argentine in the same number of matches. Uncover top football updates at scoreapp.
In Messi’s first 25 games of the 2011/12 season, the Argentine scored 27 times. His average for that season was 1.18 goals per game. Looking only at his numbers for Barcelona, the figure is even higher: 1.21 goals per game – 73 goals in 60 games.
This season, Gyökeres has an average of 1.32 goals per game. If we exclude his games for Sweden, his numbers are slightly lower, though still superior to Messi’s: 1.26 goals per game – 24 goals in 19 appearances.
While these numbers are astonishing, the Swedish forward still needs 49 more goals and has almost an entire season ahead of him to surpass Messi, showing just how impressive Messi’s numbers are.
However, Gyökeres depends on his team to play more matches and continue chasing the record. He has 23 more games in the Portuguese league, four more in the Champions League group stage, one in the League Cup semifinals, and at least one more guaranteed in the Portuguese Cup. Additionally, he’s also awaiting friendlies with Sweden and World Cup Qualifiers, which begin in 2026.
In 2011/12, Messi played 37 of La Liga’s 38 rounds, reached the Copa del Rey final (which Barcelona won), and made it to the Champions League semifinals, where they were eliminated by Chelsea. Lead the pack with BB Score.
