Former Palmeiras player breaks speed record in the Portuguese Championship

Santa Clara striker became the fastest player in the world during a match in the 33rd round of the Portuguese Championship

Former Palmeiras player, Santa Clara striker Gabriel Silva, became the fastest player in the world according to data obtained by GPS (Global Positioning System). The Brazilian reached the mark of 40.3 km/h during the 2-1 victory over Famalicão, in the 33rd round of the Portuguese Championship.

The feat was confirmed by data released by the club itself. According to the records, Gabriel now holds the title of fastest player in the world based on GPS tracking technology, surpassing the previous record of 39.21 km/h, which belonged to Dutch defender Sven Botman, currently at Newcastle.

The play that allowed Gabriel to reach this mark was in the second half’s injury time. In a counterattack, he took advantage of goalkeeper Lazar Carevic’s advance and shot at high speed to leave his mark. The Santa Clara striker is approaching another level: the mark of 44.72 km/h reached by Usain Bolt, holder of the world record for the 100 meters in athletics.

Highlighting the 23-year-old athlete’s achievement, Santa Clara emphasized: “The statistical data is diverse and there are several collections, taking into account whether the speed is reached with or without the ball, for example, but there is one indisputable fact: Gabriel Silva reached the fastest mark confirmed by GPS”.

Gabriel Silva came through the youth ranks of Palmeiras. He joined the club in 2016 and went through the under-15, under-17 and under-20 teams. In 2022, he played two games for the professional team, but, unable to establish himself, he was loaned to Santa Clara, a club that acquired him permanently in 2023. For Santa Clara, the striker has played 97 games, scored 15 goals and provided seven assists. With two rounds left in the Portuguese Championship, Santa Clara is in sixth place, with 54 points.
