Filipe Luís sees Cruzeiro as a major title contender: 'Ambition to make history'

Cruzeiro leads the Brazilian Championship, with 33 points (10 wins, three draws and two losses), closely followed by Flamengo

After Flamengo’s 1-0 victory over Fluminense this Sunday (July 20th) at Maracanã, coach Filipe Luís named Cruzeiro as the club’s main rival in the fight for the Brazilian Championship title.

He praised the work of coach Leonardo Jardim and the signings made by the club’s board, highlighting the club as the current favorite for the trophy. “Without a doubt, Cruzeiro is a strong contender for the title. They made some great signings at the beginning of the year and, most importantly, the hiring of a great coach who arrived and quickly organized this team full of stars and new players, hungry and ambitious to make history,” said Filipe Luís.

The Flamengo coach also added: “We can see this: a very organized team. Without a doubt, they will fight until the end. The championship is very long, with many games left for everyone, but Cruzeiro is a strong candidate to finish at the top of the table.”

Tight Battle at the Top of the Table

Cruzeiro and Flamengo emerge as the main contenders for the title. The Minas Gerais team leads the competition with 33 points (10 wins, three draws, and two losses), closely followed by Flamengo, with 30 points (nine wins, three draws, and two losses) and a game in hand. Completing the top half of the Série A table are Bragantino (27 points), Palmeiras (26), Botafogo (25), and Bahia (25).

Cruzeiro and Flamengo face tough matches in the next round of the Brasileirão, both on Wednesday (July 23). Cruzeiro visits Corinthians in Itaquera at 7:30 pm, who arrive under pressure after losing a derby to São Paulo. Cruzeiro faces third-place Bragantino in Bragança Paulista, São Paulo, at 9:30 pm.
