Fernando Gago is fired by president Riquelme, who has Diego Milito as a ‘favorite’ to take over Boca Juniors.
Fernando Gago is no longer the coach of Boca Juniors. The club’s president, Juan Román Riquelme, made the decision this Tuesday (4/29), two days after the team’s defeat to arch-rival River Plate in the superclásico of the Argentine Championship.
In addition to the defeat to River, this Sunday (4/27), at the Monumental de Núñez, in Buenos Aires, in the 15th round of the Argentine Championship, Fernando Gago failed in important games.
The Xeneizes were eliminated by Velez in the semifinals of the Copa Argentina and beaten by Racing in the league. In the Copa Libertadores, Boca was eliminated in the preliminary round, at Bombonera, by Alianza Lima.
The Buenos Aires club is the second most successful team in the tournament, with six trophies. Despite the setbacks, Boca leads Group A of the first phase of the Argentine Championship, with 32 points in 15 rounds. There were ten wins, two draws and three losses.
A former defensive midfielder with spells at Real Madrid and the Argentine national team, Gago took over at Boca in October 2024. He was discovered as a player by the Xeneize club.
