After deciding the final of the competition in 2024, interstate rivals will face each other again in the round of 16 of the current edition
Despite a historic victory, Atlético has had difficulty eliminating Flamengo in the Copa do Brasil. This season, the black and white team will have another chance to try to balance the record between the teams in the competition. The interstate rivals will face each other again in the tournament in the round of 16. The first match will be in Rio de Janeiro, in the week of July 30, while the second leg is scheduled for the following week, in Belo Horizonte.
The teams are the current finalists of the Copa do Brasil. Last year, the red and black team won 3-1 at Maracanã, with two goals from Gabi and one from Arrascaeta. Alan Kardec managed to pull one back for Galo in the final minutes, but it was not enough. Even with the support of the fans, the team led by Gabriel Milito did not perform well at the Arena MRV and lost 1-0.
This was Atlético’s second consecutive elimination to Flamengo. In 2022, the black and white team won 2-1 at Mineirão with goals from Ademir and Hulk, but could not hold on to the result and was eliminated in the round of 16 after a 2-0 defeat in the second leg at Maracanã.
The red and black team also won the trophy that season after beating Corinthians on penalties in the final. The first of the three clashes between the teams in the Copa do Brasil took place in 2006. That year, the team from Rio opened up a good lead in the first leg of the quarterfinals, with a 4-1 win. Renato Abreu scored twice, Jônatas and Obina scored for the red and black team at Maracanã, while Marinho scored a goal. Atlético, which was playing in the Série B, could do little and was left with a 0-0 draw, which guaranteed Flamengo a place in the next phase of the competition. The Rio de Janeiro team lifted the trophy by beating Vasco in the final.
If the comeback didn’t happen in 2006, Atlético was inspired by another historic match against Flamengo. Seven years later, this time in the semifinals, the black and white team was defeated in the first leg by 2-0 away from home, with goals from Chicão and Victor Cáceres, but managed a historic comeback in the second leg. The start worried the fans. Éverton opened the scoring for the visitors after 3 minutes at Mineirão. Despite the difficulty, Galo scored four goals with Carlos, Maicosuel, Dátolo and Luan and secured a place in the final by winning 4-1. Just like Flamengo, which was champion in every year in which it eliminated Atlético, the Minas Gerais team lifted the trophy in 2014 after beating Cruzeiro in the final.
