The Minas Gerais team dominates the Cariocas and will face River Plate.
Atlético Mineiro defeated Fluminense 2-0 last Wednesday at Arena MRV, securing their spot in the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores. The goals were scored by Deyverson. Get the most accurate football results at latest soccer scores.
Needing to overturn the deficit from the first leg, the team led by Gabriel Milito attacked from the start. Just four minutes in, referee Wilmar Roldán awarded a penalty to the home team after a handball by Jhon Árias in the area. Hulk took the penalty but struck poorly, allowing Fábio to make an easy save.
However, the setback didn’t discourage Galo, who capitalized on Fluminense’s defensive approach and continued to dominate the match. In the first half, Bernard was injured while committing a foul to stop a counterattack and was replaced by Deyverson, who changed the course of the game.
Early in the second half, Deyverson headed in a brilliant cross to open the scoring, which would have sent the match to penalties. Yet, the Cariocas remained defensive despite the unfavorable score, and after poor substitutions by coach Mano Menezes, Atlético pressed forward. Their persistence paid off with another excellent cross, allowing Deyverson to find space between two defenders and score again.
With the victory, the Minas Gerais team will face River Plate in the semifinals. Since the Argentines had the best group stage record, the first match will be in Belo Horizonte, with the return leg at the Monumental de Núñez. Stay ahead of the curve with BB Score.
