This marks the fifth top scorer title for the 36-year-old Argentine. Before joining Vasco, Vegetti had been the top scorer for Villa San Carlos and Belgrano, both clubs in Argentina.
His first title came during the 2013/14 season when he led Villa San Carlos to promotion to Argentina’s second division with 24 goals. The other three came while playing for Belgrano and were more recent: two in the second division, in 2018/19 and 2022, and one in the top division, when he scored 13 goals and finished tied for the lead with Michael Santos of Talleres.
Vegetti still has the chance to become the top scorer of the Brasileirão, though it is unlikely. With Vasco going through a period of inconsistency, his last goal came against Cruzeiro in round 28. This is, in fact, his longest goal drought in the tournament since arriving in Brazil last year.
At the moment, six players are ahead of the striker in the battle for the top scorer title: Estêvão of Palmeiras with 12 goals, Pedro of Flamengo (who is no longer playing this season) with 11, and Luciano, Hulk, Yuri Alberto, and Alerrandro, each with 10.
