With wages in arrears, Memphis threatens not to return to Corinthians

Striker Memphis Depay gives Corinthians an ultimatum to receive around R$ 6 millions in overdue wages since May of this year

With just over R$6 million owed to Corinthians, Memphis Depay has given the club an ultimatum to deposit the outstanding amounts. Otherwise, the Dutch star is threatening not to fulfill his professional obligations.

This means that the Timão’s number 10 understands that he could, for example, not show up with the rest of the squad next Saturday, June 28, or refuse to train and play for the team. Memphis, represented by lawyers, notified the club about the outstanding amount on May 15, when Corinthians was still managed by Augusto Melo.

On Tuesday (June 24), the player made a second notification, this time received by the interim management of Osmar Stabile, when he stated that he had been ignored regarding the first demand, and demanded that Corinthians resolve all outstanding issues with him by the end of this Wednesday, June 25.

According to the document, Corinthians has not yet paid the player the R$4.7 million that he is entitled to, under contract, for winning the Campeonato Paulista title this year. In addition, the club owes R$1.4 million for the player’s image rights.

The total debt to the forward is therefore R$6.1 million. If Corinthians is unable to comply with the request, the Dutchman states that the club must cease using his image and reserves the right to interrupt his labor obligations. In addition, the player’s lawyers have warned that interest of approximately R$150,000 will be added to the debt.

Corinthians’ Position

“The legal department of Sport Club Corinthians Paulista informs that it received the new notification made by the staff of the athlete Memphis Depay on the morning of Tuesday (24) and reiterates that until then it had no knowledge of the first notification, sent to the previous management, dated May 15. Upon becoming aware of the situation, the club immediately adopted the necessary measures to fully understand the problem and also to resolve it.”
