Flamengo president gives strong message about the League: 'It won't happen under these conditions'

The director believes that the current proposal to create a League is detrimental to Flamengo in terms of revenue distribution.

The Brazilian Football League, self-managed by the clubs, seems closer than ever to becoming a reality. However, a statement from Flamengo president Luiz Eduardo Baptista showed that the club still vehemently disagrees with the proposed division of funds.

In an interview with Flamengo TV, the Rio de Janeiro club’s official channel, the director sent a strong message indicating that he will not accept a proposal in which the club earns less from television rights. “Do you know when I’ll accept receiving, at most, 3.5 times more than someone who’s smaller? Never! This agreement will not happen under these conditions. Flamengo will not be expropriated, because this is a process of expropriating an asset that belongs to us, for no reason,” said Bap.

Two main groups of clubs interested in creating the League, Libra and LFU, have proposed a joint preliminary agreement to take over the Brazilian Championship. According to research by Rodrigo Mattos, from Uol, the new tournament rules impose a “disparity limit”, in which the club that collects the most revenue can earn, at most, 3.5 times more than the one that receives the least.
