Barcelona de Guayquil coach was fined for advertising without the entity’s authorization in a Libertadores game

Segundo Castillo, coach of Barcelona de Guayquil, was fined by CONMEBOL US$50,000 for displaying advertising on one of his flashy outfits during a Copa Libertadores game. In the group stage match against River Plate, on May 8, in Guayaquil, the coach took to the field wearing a leopard-print tuxedo and a brooch with the logo of an Ecuadorian national lottery.

‘Sir Second Castle’, as he became popularly known for his unusual elegance, violated an article in the Libertadores Club Manual that penalizes cases identified as “ambush marketing”, a type of veiled and unauthorized advertising. In a statement, Conmebol said that the amount will be deducted directly from the money that Barcelona will receive for broadcasting rights.

The coach and the lottery brand took advantage of the excitement surrounding his look to create a social media campaign with the logo prominently displayed on the brooch.

“I feel like I have to live up to my players and the club,” Castillo said of his flashy outfits, which have been a hit since the start of the Libertadores, despite Barcelona’s elimination in the group stage. Vogue Italia magazine dedicated an article to the Ecuadorian coach, highlighting his “dandy look in black” and describing his style of dress as “elegant” and “unforgettable.”
