Certificate of disparity: how the international media reacts to Flamengo's elimination

Nervousness and inattention cost Rubro-Negro dearly, who even reacted, but could not avoid the 4-2 defeat to Bayern, in the Club World Cup

Bayern Munich’s qualification for the quarterfinals of the Club World Cup, after beating Flamengo 4-2 last Sunday (29), was highlighted in the main sports media outlets in Europe

The score, however, shared the spotlight with Harry Kane, who scored two goals, in the headlines of local newspapers — which treated the triumph as “easy”. “There was no danger”, reported Süddeutsche Zeitung. AS, from Spain, focused on Filipe Luís and treated the setback as a farewell for the red-and-black coach.

The French media followed a different path and did not even give the Brazilians space in its L’Équipe newspaper. This is because the newspaper only highlighted the “scheduled meeting with PSG” in the quarterfinals. As mentioned, Harry Kane became the center of attention in the international media this Monday morning (30).

Bild newspaper began praising the star’s great performance on its social media, while Marca, from Spain, said that the number 9 “put Flamengo’s feet on the ground”. Meanwhile, the British press, such as Sport, pointed out that the striker’s goals guaranteed passage to a new “trial by fire” in the tournament.

Argentine newspaper criticizes performance

Returning to South America, the Argentine newspaper Olé acknowledged the effort of Filipe Luís’s team, but said that the Brazilians were living “an illusion”. “It didn’t work, Flamengo. It’s an illusion to bet on a comeback.

Even though they managed to punish Bayern on many occasions, the German team was superior”, said an excerpt. Finally, the newspaper returned to the old debate about the European superiority over the other participants. “The gap was exposed again: the South American level, once again, showed itself to be very far from the European one. With fewer mistakes and experience, they decided the duel and highlighted the gap that seems impossible to close”, it analyzed.

Kane’s performance sets the pace

Author of two goals, the striker became the symbol of the classification referred to as Bavarian by the locals. The number 9 opened the scoring early on and reappeared in the final stage to consolidate the victory. Goretzka also found the net, while Erick Pulgar, an own goal, contributed to the adverse score.

Gerson and Jorginho scored for the Rio de Janeiro team. According to the Spanish newspaper AS, Kane “said goodbye to Filipe Luís” with authority and made clear the European favorite in the competition. Marca reinforced the psychological impact of the result for the Brazilian team, stating that the English star “brought Flamengo down to earth” by exposing the defensive limitations of the South American team.

PSG on the horizon: full focus on the next phase

With qualification assured, Bayern will face Paris Saint-Germain next Saturday, July 5, in the quarterfinals. The ball will roll at 5 pm (Brasília time), at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, in Atlanta. The Rubro-Negro, in turn, returns to Brazil to rest and resume work aiming at the rest of the season. | | How the international media reacted to Flamengo’s elimination
