According to Spanish newspaper As, Barcelona has withdrawn from participating in the new club competition, which begins in June 2025.
Barcelona has withdrawn from seeking a spot in this year’s Super Club World Cup, according to the Spanish press. The team was considering taking León-MEX’s spot in the competition organized by FIFA, according to Spanish newspaper “As”. The Mexican team was excluded from the tournament because it is part of the same group that owns Pachuca, also from Mexico. The Catalan club began to study the possibility due to FIFA’s lack of definition regarding the criteria for defining which team will take León’s spot.
The entity intends to hold a playoff between América de México and Los Angeles to define the new participant, which will be Flamengo’s third opponent in the tournament, in a game that will take place on June 24, in Orlando. Barcelona’s withdrawal from going to FIFA to apply for a spot was due to a few reasons. The main one is that the spots reserved for European clubs have already been filled by the last four Champions League winners and eight teams qualified via the FIFA rankings.
Barça also has no plans to break agreements for friendlies already set for the last week of July in Asia. Two of them will be in South Korea, and a third in Japan. The club’s goal, which has already secured 15 million euros, is to reach 25 million with pre-season commitments.
Another reason would be the schedule. If they made it to the World Cup final, scheduled for July 13, the Catalan squad would have little time off between the two seasons.
Barcelona could secure a spot in the 2029 Club World Cup if they win the Champions League. The team advanced to the semi-finals of the current edition after eliminating Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday (15/4).
