Greek-Australian Ange Postecoglou admitted that he has a fond relationship with Vasco, a club he faced when he was a player
The coach responsible for taking Tottenham out of the title race, Greek-Australian Ange Postecoglou has a fond relationship with a Brazilian team. The newest champion of the Europa League spoke about his relationship with Vasco.
When he was still a player, Postecoglou faced the Rio de Janeiro team wearing the jersey of South Melbourne, from Australia. The friendly match took place on June 14, 1985, and the Brazilians came out on top: 1-0, with a goal by legendary center forward Roberto Dinamite. “I have to be careful when I tell who I support, what if one day I coach a club in Brazil… I don’t know, I end up at Corinthians, for example, that would cause me problems. I’ve always loved Brazilian football,” declared the coach, before the Europa League final. “I actually played against Vasco da Gama in 1985. They went to Australia, and Roberto Dinamite was playing at the time. I got his shirt, and I still have it to this day. Every time I visit Brazil, I always remember Vasco,” he added.
Postecoglou made history this Wednesday (21/5). The coach led Tottenham to the Europa League title. With the trophy, the London club ended a 17-year drought without a trophy – the last one had been the English League Cup in the 2007/08 season. In the European final this Wednesday, Spurs beat Manchester United 1-0 at the San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao, Spain.
