Club World Cup winner with Chelsea, the 30-year-old athlete was signed by Flamengo and signed until the end of 2028.
Flamengo announced this Wednesday the signing of Spanish midfielder Saúl Ñiguez. The player has signed a contract with the club until the end of 2028.
A product of Atlético de Madrid’s youth academy, Saúl was a teammate of Filipe Luís, Flamengo’s current coach. Together, they won the Europa League in the 2011-2012 and 2017-2018 seasons, the European Super Cup in 2018, and the Copa del Rey in 2012-2013.
But Filipe Luís isn’t the Spaniard’s only old acquaintance. He also played with Italian-Brazilian midfielder Jorginho, one of the club’s new signings, during his time at Chelsea. The two players won the 2021 Club World Cup with the English club.
Last season, the Spanish midfielder played 24 matches, scored one goal, and provided six assists for Sevilla. Saúl’s arrival coincides with the departure of Gerson, who was signed earlier this month by Zenit St. Petersburg in Russia.
