The driver stated in his testimony that he fell asleep at the wheel. The athlete was taken to the hospital in a critical condition and doctors initiated the brain death protocol. The protocol is a set of tests and procedures used to confirm the loss of brain function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The procedure, however, was interrupted after Severino presented \u201ca cough reflex,\u201d reported the Dr. Waldemar Tebaldi Municipal Hospital in Americana, where he was initially taken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The player was transferred a few days later to Ribeir\u00e3o Preto, where he remained under medical care and began to show gradual improvement in his health. At the end of March, Severino left the ICU and has continued treatment in his hospital room since then.
