The biggest football tournament in Brazil has come to an end. On Sunday, the 8th, all 20 teams from S\u00e9rie A of the Brazilian Championship<\/a> took to the field at the same time to definitively decide the championship. There was a title after 29 years, relegation in the centenary year, and a Libertadores spot after 35 years. Here\u2019s everything that happened. As expected, Botafogo was crowned the great Brazilian champion of 2024 by defeating S\u00e3o Paulo 2-1 at Nilton Santos. Botafogo could have even lost, as second-placed Palmeiras was defeated by Fluminense at Allianz Parque. This is Botafogo\u2019s third title in the competition and their first in 29 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Out of the eight spots for the Libertadores, seven had already been secured, and the last spot was between Bahia and Cruzeiro. Vasco still had a mathematical chance, but it depended on both teams losing and having to make up a goal difference of 12 goals. Bahia only depended on itself and needed a victory over already-relegated Atl\u00e9tico-GO to secure qualification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that\u2019s exactly what happened: Thaciano and Luciano Rodriguez scored the goals that sent Tricolor de A\u00e7o to South America’s biggest club competition after 35 years. Cruzeiro did its part and won 1-0 away to Juventude, but it wasn\u2019t enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The battle to avoid relegation was the highlight of the final round. Atl\u00e9tico-MG, Athletico-PR, Bragantino, and Fluminense fought to escape the drop zone, with Athletico-PR failing to survive and being relegated in their centenary year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fluminense did its part, winning 1-0 against Palmeiras at Allianz Parque. Bragantino did the same, thrashing already-relegated Crici\u00fama 5-1. In the desperate match, Atl\u00e9tico-MG won 1-0 with a goal from Rubens, following a rebound from a missed penalty by Hulk, securing the fall of Furac\u00e3o.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The relegation battle also impacted the spots for the 2025 Copa Sudamericana. With their respective victories, Fluminense and Atl\u00e9tico-MG joined Gr\u00eamio, Cruzeiro, Vasco, and Vit\u00f3ria as the teams qualified for next year\u2019s international tournament.
